How much power should my charging station have?

The ideal charging power depends on your car, grid connection and charging needs. Most electric cars support AC charging up to 11 kW (3-phase).
An 11 kW charging station is therefore often the best choice for your home, provided you have a 3-phase connection - an average car will then fully charge within 6-10 hours, even if the battery is flat.

A quality home charging station in 2025 will cost on average between €750 and €1,750, excluding installation. The final price depends on the type of charging station and the desired features. Smart charging posts with options such as dynamic charging, consumption monitoring and app control are at the upper end of this price range.

The charging time depends on three factors: the capacity of your car battery, the maximum charging power of your car, and the power of your charging station.
With a standard 11 kW charging station, you can fully charge an average electric car (60 kWh battery) in 4-6 hours.
Smaller cars like a Renault Zoe charge in 2-3 hours, while larger SUVs with a 100 kWh battery need 8-9 hours.

With single-phase charging, you use one of the three available phases of your electricity connection, which yields a maximum charging power of 3.7 kW (16A) or 7.4 kW (32A).
With three-phase charging, all three phases are used, allowing you to charge at 11 kW (16A) or even 22 kW (32A).
Three-phase charging is therefore significantly faster, but requires that both your car and your grid connection support three-phase charging.

In many cases, an adjustment to the fuse box is necessary for a charging station.
For an 11 kW charging station, you need a three-phase connection (3x25A) and a free group in your fuse box.
For older homes, a reinforcement of the connection or expansion of the fuse box may be necessary.

In 2025, there are various subsidy options for charging stations in the Netherlands.
Some municipalities offer local subsidies for home charging stations, and there are also provincial schemes available.
For business users, there is the MIA/VAMIL scheme, which makes up to 45% of the investment costs tax deductible.

Smart charging means that your charging station intelligently communicates with your car, energy system, and/or energy supplier to optimize the charging process.
The benefits are numerous: you can automatically charge at times when the electricity price is low (with a dynamic contract), adjust the charging power to the available capacity in your home (load balancing), or align charging with the yield of your solar panels.

It's not that your solar panels are directly connected to your charging station, but a smart charging station does allow you to harness your solar energy directly. Such a charging station automatically adjusts the charging capacity to the output of your solar panels. There are also charging stations that charge precisely when the electricity price is low - which often coincides with sunny moments. Simple charging stations do not take this into account. The cost of charging an electric car at home is directly linked to your electricity rate.

Modern smart charging stations offer various solutions for this.
You can opt for a charging station with multiple connections or an authentication system via charging cards or apps.

Load balancing (or dynamic charging) is a smart feature where your charging station continuously monitors the power consumption in your home and automatically adjusts the charging power to prevent overload.
When other appliances consume a lot of power, the charging station temporarily reduces its power.
As soon as capacity becomes available again, the charging station increases the charging power again.

The terms 'charging station' and 'wallbox' are often used interchangeably, but technically there is a small difference.
A 'charging station' (or charging post) is a standalone post, often used in public spaces or driveways.
A 'wallbox' is a more compact charger mounted on the wall, ideal for garages or carports.

Bidirectional charging means that electricity can flow in two directions: from the grid to the car (normal charging) and from the car back to the home (Vehicle-to-Home, V2H) or the grid (Vehicle-to-Grid, V2G).
With V2H, you can use your car battery as a home battery during peak times or power outages.
With V2G, you can even earn money by feeding power back to the grid during high prices.
