What is the ERE scheme and how does it benefit me?

A quality home charging station in 2025 will cost on average between €750 and €1,750, excluding installation. The final price depends on the type of charging station and the desired features. Smart charging posts with options such as dynamic charging, consumption monitoring and app control are at the upper end of this price range.

Installation costs vary by situation. Standard installation is often relatively simple, but additional excavation or meter box modifications can increase the total amount.

There are also charging stations that charge precisely when the electricity price is low - which often coincides with sunny moments. Simple charging stations do not take this into account. Load balancing (or dynamic charging) is a smart feature where your charging station continuously monitors the power consumption in your home and automatically adjusts the charging power to prevent overload.
When other appliances consume a lot of power, the charging station temporarily reduces its power.
As soon as capacity becomes available again, the charging station increases the charging power again.

The terms 'charging station' and 'wallbox' are often used interchangeably, but technically there is a small difference.
A 'charging station' (or charging post) is a standalone post, often used in public spaces or driveways.
A 'wallbox' is a more compact charger mounted on the wall, ideal for garages or carports.

Bidirectional charging means that electricity can flow in two directions: from the grid to the car (normal charging) and from the car back to the home (Vehicle-to-Home, V2H) or the grid (Vehicle-to-Grid, V2G).
With V2H, you can use your car battery as a home battery during peak times or power outages.
With V2G, you can even earn money by feeding power back to the grid during high prices.

The ideal charging power depends on your car, grid connection and charging needs. Most electric cars support AC charging up to 11 kW (3-phase).
An 11 kW charging station is therefore often the best choice for your home, provided you have a 3-phase connection - an average car will then fully charge within 6-10 hours, even if the battery is flat.

In theory it can be done, but in practice it is usually not wise with limited emergency power. EV charging requires a lot of energy and high power; your battery drains quickly and you're left with less for essential services. Moreover, Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) is a separate functionality that requires specific hardware. In an emergency situation, it is often smarter to reserve your emergency power for base loads and only recharge when sufficient PV generation and capacity is available.

ERE stands for Emission Reduction Unit. It is a Dutch scheme whereby, as the owner of a charging station, you receive financial compensation for the CO₂ reduction you realize by driving electrically. Per charged kilowatt hour, a certificate is issued and traded on the market. The revenue is paid out annually through a booking service provider. With normal driving, you can count on roughly €150 to €250 per year.

The ERE scheme requires accurate and tamper-proof recorded measurement of charge consumption. This is only possible with an officially approved MID meter that is physically built into the charging station. A separate meter in the meter box does not meet the requirements. Important: A MID meter cannot be added afterwards - the charging station must be equipped with it as standard.

You register through a booking service provider. That party registers your charging data with the Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa) and sells ERE certificates on your behalf. Annually, you share the number of kWh charged - this can be done automatically through a back-office link or manually through a picture of the MID meter. If you sign up before May 2026, your credits will be charged back from January 1, 2026.

Yes, many modern charging stations support so-called solar charging or surplus charging. The charging station then detects when your solar panels generate more than your household consumes, and uses that surplus to charge your car. This increases your self-consumption and reduces charging costs. When purchasing, ask if the charging station has a dynamic charging mode and if it is compatible with your inverter.

With single-phase charging, you use one of the three phases of the electricity grid, giving a maximum charging power of about 7.4 kW. With 3-phase charging, you spread the power across all three phases, allowing you to charge up to 11 or 22 kW. 3-phase charging is faster, but requires that both the charging station and the car support 3-phase. For most individuals, 11 kW 3-phase is more than enough.

Smart charging is not a legal requirement for individuals in the Netherlands, but it is highly recommended. With a smart charging station you can set charging times at off-peak hours (when electricity is cheaper or greener), charge dynamically based on grid load, and integrate with a home battery or solar panels. Some grid operators and municipalities do make smart charging a condition of subsidies or connection permits.

Dynamic load balancing ensures that the charging station automatically uses less power when other devices in the house demand a lot of power, so that your main fuse does not blow. This is particularly relevant if you have a relatively small main connection (1x25A or 3x25A) or want to connect multiple charging stations to the same connection. Without load balancing, you run the risk of overloading the connection.

In an apartment or with shared parking, charging is more difficult but not impossible. Options include a charging station in an assigned parking space (possibly through the VvE), a charging station in a parking garage, or use of public charging stations in the neighborhood. VvEs can also realize a charging solution collectively; special charging solutions are available for this purpose that support multiple users and settlement per resident.

It depends a lot on the power source. If you charge on solar power or via a 100% green energy contract, then the CO₂ emissions are virtually zero. If you charge on the average Dutch power mix, then electric driving is still considerably cleaner than an average gasoline car - even though some of that power still comes from fossil sources. As the power grid becomes greener, the sustainability of electric charging automatically increases.

AC (alternating current) charging is the standard for home chargers and public charging stations: the conversion to direct current takes place inside the car itself, which makes charging slightly slower but provides cheaper infrastructure. DC (direct current) charging bypasses the car's internal charger and charges the battery directly, allowing much higher power outputs (50-350 kW). DC charging is therefore suitable for fast charging on the road, but not for home installations because of the high cost and heavier connection required.
